SPEAKER_01: When most people think about stress, they picture being overwhelmed.
SPEAKER_01: Deadlines, bills, traffic, an argument with their spouse, a screaming toddler, military transition, divorce, losing someone you love, running a business, trying to survive.
SPEAKER_01: But here's the problem: your brain doesn't categorize stress the way you do.
SPEAKER_01: It doesn't care whether you're running from a predator or refreshing your bank account every 10 minutes because you're worried about money.
SPEAKER_01: To your brain, stress is simply one question.
SPEAKER_01: Am I safe?
SPEAKER_01: If the answer is, I don't know, your body begins changing, not emotionally, biologically.
SPEAKER_01: Thousands, and I mean thousands, of microscopic decisions begin happening every second without your permission.
SPEAKER_01: You don't choose them, your body does.
SPEAKER_01: One of the scientists who changed how the world understands stress is neuroscientist Robert Spolowski at Stanford University.
SPEAKER_01: After spending decades studying both humans and wild baboons, Spolowski discovered something fascinating.
SPEAKER_01: Animals experience intense stress, but it usually ends.
SPEAKER_01: A zebra escapes the lion, and 20 minutes later, it's back grazing in the field.
SPEAKER_01: Its heart rate returns to normal.
SPEAKER_01: Its hormones settle down.
SPEAKER_01: Its body recovers.
SPEAKER_01: Humans?
SPEAKER_01: We're different.
SPEAKER_01: We can relive yesterday's argument, worry about tomorrow's bills, feel something that hasn't happened yet, and mentally replay every mistake we've ever made.
SPEAKER_01: Our brains can create a stress response without a single physical threat in front of us.
SPEAKER_01: Think about that.
SPEAKER_01: Your imagination can activate survival biology.
SPEAKER_01: That's incredible.
SPEAKER_01: And it's also dangerous when it never turns off.
SPEAKER_01: This brings us to one of the most important concepts almost nobody talks about.
SPEAKER_01: It's called allostatic load.
SPEAKER_01: The term was developed by neuroscientist Bruce McEwen, whose research transformed over our understanding of chronic stress.

SPEAKER_01: Neither do two or five.
SPEAKER_01: But imagine adding another book every single day for years.

SPEAKER_01: But years of carrying emotional weight, financial stress, relationship conflict, poor sleep, processed foods, constant notifications, overworking, and never truly recovering create something scientists call allostatic load.
SPEAKER_01: The cumulative wear and tear on your body's systems.
SPEAKER_01: Your body wasn't designed to live in a constant state of emergency.
SPEAKER_01: Yet many people do.
SPEAKER_01: Here's where things get fascinating.
SPEAKER_01: Most people think stress causes weight gain because of one hormone, cortisol.
SPEAKER_01: And while cortisol certainly plays a role, that's only one piece of a much bigger story.

SPEAKER_01: Although it makes up only about 2% of your body weight, it uses roughly 20% of your body's energy at rest.

SPEAKER_01: Visceral fat surrounds organs deep inside the abdomen.

SPEAKER_01: Matthew Walker has shown that even one night of restricted sleep can shift hormones related to appetite.
SPEAKER_01: Gremlin, the hormone that stimulates hunger, tends to increase, while leptin, which signals and helps signal fullness, tends to decrease.
SPEAKER_01: In practical terms, you often feel hungrier and less satisfied after eating.
SPEAKER_01: Studies have also found that sleep restriction is associated with a stronger preference for calorie-dense foods.
SPEAKER_01: Think about that.
SPEAKER_01: After poor sleep, your body isn't just tired.
SPEAKER_01: It's nudging you towards foods that provide quick energy.
SPEAKER_01: Again, not because you're weak, because your body is trying to solve what it perceives as an energy shortage.
SPEAKER_01: Here's something else.

SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.

SPEAKER_01: Here's the biggest lesson I want you to take away today.
SPEAKER_01: Your body is not your enemy.
SPEAKER_01: Let me say that again.

SPEAKER_01: Build moments of genuine recovery into your week.
SPEAKER_01: Talk to someone you trust when stress becomes overwhelming.
SPEAKER_01: And remember, progress isn't about eliminating stress.
SPEAKER_01: Life will always include stress.
SPEAKER_01: The goal is to become better at recovering from it.
SPEAKER_01: Recovery is where resilience is built.
SPEAKER_01: As a retired drill sergeant, people often assume discipline means pushing harder, doing more, grinding longer.
SPEAKER_01: But here's what the military taught me.
SPEAKER_01: The strongest units aren't the ones that never face adversity.
SPEAKER_01: They're the ones that recover well enough to be ready for the next mission.
SPEAKER_01: Your body works the same way.
SPEAKER_01: You don't become stronger during the workout.
SPEAKER_01: You become stronger during the recovery.
SPEAKER_01: The same principle applies to your brain.
SPEAKER_01: The same principle applies to your life.
SPEAKER_01: So here's the challenge I want to leave you with this week.
